(Matthew 20:29-34)
29 As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed Him. 30 And two people who were blind, sitting by the road, hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” 31 But the crowd sternly warned them to be quiet; yet they cried out all the more, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” 32 And Jesus stopped and called them, and said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 33 They said to Him, “Lord, we want our eyes to be opened.” 34 Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes; and immediately they regained their sight and followed Him.TODAY'S TAKEAWAY:
Jericho was one of the wealthier cities in Judea with a high work ethic, so only the truly destitute people were beggars. And while Judaism did value care for beggars, the crowds would have been more focused on the fact that Jesus was heading for Jerusalem. So their hope would have been that Jesus was about to take the throne and lead Israel into the Millennial kingdom to fulfill all of their covenants, and establish physical peace. This was probably why the people were trying to shush these two blind men, because they would not have wanted any interruptions in this process of Jesus becoming their rightful king.
Because the blind men cried out to Jesus and called Him the Son of David, indicates that they recognized and acknowledged Jesus as their Messiah... not just the rightful king, but the King of kings! And rightly so! One day, after the Tribulation, Jesus will come again and establish the Millennial kingdom, and there will be physical peace here on all the earth. But at this time, Jesus was here to accomplish His work on the cross, so that there can be spiritual peace in the hearts of people.
What most of these people did not understand was that in order for Jesus to take the physical throne, the Israelites - as a nation - have to individually have Jesus on their personal throne, in their hearts.
- - - The Abrahamic covenant includes them having their promised land, seed and blessings, which by the way includes blessings for all nations through their seed: that being Jesus.
- - - The Mosaic covenant reminds the Israelites that in order to have their Abrahamic covenant fulfilled, they have to be following God's Law perfectly. The only way this is possible, is to become a believer.
- - - The Davidic covenant provides the promise of this throne being eternal, with a righteous king - that - being Jesus, (descendant) Son of David! But because of the Israelites' hardened hearts, it will take the judgements during the Tribulation for this nation to see their signs of Jesus' return, and they as a nation will believe that Jesus was and is their Messiah - their Savior and King - the King of kings!
Because of our sinful nature, we are all born spiritually deaf and blind. But the Lord opens our ears and eyes to His truth, when we recognize and believe in Jesus, who is the Lord God, who came in flesh to die and rise again so that we can have victory over sin and death. When anyone cries out for mercy, desiring that Jesus becomes their Lord, Savior and King of their hearts, it is the Lord who helps us to see clearly and know Him personally! And like the two blind men who received their sight, we will thankfully desire to follow the Lord and partake in His glorious, righteous kingdom of peace, joy and hope!
