relationships (Genesis 4:1-2, 24-26) Give God the Credit

(Genesis 4:1-2) Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, “I have gotten a manchild with the help of the Lord.” 2 Again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

(Genesis 4:25-26)  Adam had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, for, she said, “God has appointed me another offspring in place of Abel, for Cain killed him.” 26 To Seth, to him also a son was born; and he called his name Enosh. Then men began to call upon the name of the Lord.

TODAY'S THOUGHTS AND MEDITATION:

From the information given, we see that Eve gave God the credit and the glory for the birth of Cain, as well as for Seth.  But why not for Abel?  I'm only going to speculate here... maybe she thanked God for Cain, but he proved to be a handful, so she wasn't too enthusiast about thanking God - yet.  Although I'm sure she was very happy when she saw that she had a righteous son in Abel, but then when he was murdered, and Cain left the area, she was thankful once again for a replacement son.

Nonetheless, Eve realized that God is sovereign in all things, and was vocal about it.  Perhaps she even prayed to God and asked Him for another son.  Perhaps Adam saw her praying for another son.  So what I find very exciting from verse 26 is that men started to call upon the Lord!  Did they not do that up until this point?  Did it take the testimony of Eve, a mere woman, to help them see that it is beneficial to seek the Lord for His help?

Very often it takes a person's testimony to inspire others.  And a testimony will have a much bigger impact when one can see a long pattern of beneficial and momentous outcomes.  How can we say that God is always there for us to help us through everything, if we never go through anything?  But as we go through struggles, and trust God with everything, not only will we see for ourselves how faithful and gracious the Lord is, but others will as well.  So let's not hold back in telling others how God has worked in our lives!  As we share our testimonies, we will be encouraging others to seek a close relationship with the Lord.
